Drag Queen Story Hour

Drag Queen Story Hour with Ms. Naomi Chomsky
Saturday, July 20 10:30AM - 12:00PM
Rochambeau Library
PCL has partnered with the national nonprofit Drag Queen Story Hour to bring a fun and fabulous story time to Rochambeau's Children's Area. The event will be just as the title sounds - a drag queen reading age-appropriate books to families with children, followed by a craft or other fun creative activity. Ms Naomi will read picture books that help children develop empathy, learn about gender diversity and difference, as well as tap into their own creativity.
These special story hours began in San Francisco in 2015 and have grown in popularity. A Drag Queen Story Hour can be life-changing and possibly even life-saving for anyone who feels different because of their identity or interests. By encountering themes of gender diversity, self-expression and tolerance in a gentle way and at an early age, a Drag Queen Story Hour may help to curb bullying of LGBTQ kids and other kids who may be perceived as different in all kinds of ways. You can see a news report of a story hour that took place in the Queens Public Library system in New York in the video below.
Our guest reader, Naomi Chomsky, is a health care worker and activist who lives in Providence. Ms. Naomi recently supported PCL at our Rappel for PCL fundraiser, rappelling 120 feet down the Regency Plaza. After a quick costume change, Naomi posed for photos with many Edgers and spectators. Ms.Naomi presented a Drag Queen Story Hour during Pride Month at Fall River Public Library.
This event is for families with children of all ages. For more information about Drag Queen Story Hour, and information about how to contact us about the event, visit our FAQ page.
