Read and Vote for the RI Latino Book Awards

We're celebrating Latino Books Month! We hope you'll join us by reading (and in the case of youth, voting for your favorite) books on selected lists put together by the Rhode Island Latino Books Month Awards Committee. 

There are several age categories for youth. Kids and teens should read at least three titles on the lists before voting online for their favorite choices. The deadline to vote is May 29. The winners will be announced on May 31.

Ms. Carla of Fox Point Library has created a video playlist of many of the nominated picture books in the K-2 category as well as several titles in the Grades 3-5 chapter book category. You can find the playlist and view videos anytime on our YouTube channel. Digital editions of the books can be found in the Ocean State Libraries eZone and via our Hoopla streaming app. Viewing and listening to books via Carla's videos also counts as reading a book for voting purposes. Physical copies of books may also be obtainable through our twice-weekly curbside book pickup service at four locations. 

Ms. Estefania of Wanskuck Library continues her twice-weekly virtual story times and will read Hispanic and Latino authors in honor of Latino Books Month during the month of May. Estefania reads LIVE on YouTube on Mondays at 10:30AM in English and Wednesdays at 11:30AM in Spanish, or they can be viewed anytime later on the YouTube Channel.

Adult readers are invited to accept the challenge to read, share and discuss titles from a selected list of 25 titles during Latino Books Month. Afterlife by Julia Alvarez, which is on the list, will be discussed on May 18 by the PCL Reads Virtual Book Discussion Group. Why not participate?
